Cease and Desist 25th Anniversary – January 19th, 2014

Cease and Desist 25th Anniversary, January 19, 2014 – Mick, Marc, Ian and Brent

(This story has many links embedded for additional reading)

As many of you know, 2014 marks the 25th year that Cease and Desist has been together as a band. Even more remarkable is that there has been no member changes. Marc, Brent and myself have been together since January of 1989. Crazy stuff and fairly unprecedented.

For our 25th anniversary, we used The Point Neighborhood Pub as the venue.

Originally, I had asked a lot of our friends we have played with over the years to come out to perform with us. Vancouver great bluesman and McGyver co-star Jim Byrnes, Wide Mouth Mason’s Shaun Verreault, Chilliwack’s Bill Henderson, Trooper’s Ra McGuire and Brian ‘Smitty’ Smith and Randy Bachman all confirmed they would appear with us for our 25th anniversary. The enormity of the talent that had agreed to appear with us dictated that we should have it in a venue that would hold a lot of people. The Commodore came to mind. If we were to make it for a worthwhile charity, it could be rented for a discounted rate. I had people research Sarah McLachlan’s school of music as a possible recipient in exchange for her appearance at our anniversary and all indications were that she would have done it. We were approached by a promoter in April who said he would like to take over the event. Being that we are all too busy to start with and have no expertise in that field, we gladly passed on the gauntlet. We found out in October that the ball had been dropped, and nothing was done for the event. There was no time to pull an event of that magnitude in such a short amount of time so the Commodore idea was scraped. Brent’s old friend (and an ex sound engineer of Cease and Desist) had opened up a club in Port Moody called ‘The Point’. We decided to keep the event much smaller and do it there. Randy Bachman still insisted on coming to play and help us celebrate. In retrospect it was still an amazing evening. The place was packed with friends and relatives, ex colleagues and fans from all of our 25 years together. Many flew or drove in from all areas of Canada and the USA.

The evening started out with Will Davis (the Vancouver Comedy Festival) kicking off the festivities with his humorous commentary of us. We had just done a military tour to the North Pole with Will the month before. It was a Christmas Concert for the troops – so he had some fresh material on us.

The band played a set as the trio, then a set with Randy Bachman as ‘The Randy Bachman Band’, then a set with Ian Cameron as our ‘four piece entity’ before we had Hayley McLean come up to play with us. Brent and I then went up to play some Led Zeppelin with Rick Fedyk. We then opened the floor to all of our musician friends. Dave Reimer, Jack Guppy (of Barney Bentall and The Legendary Hearts) played as well as Ray Roper of Stonebolt, Geraldo Dominelli and many others performed as well.
